The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia. To its east lie Laos and Cambodia; to its south, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia; and to its west, the Andaman Sea and Myanmar. Its capital and largest city is Bangkok.
The region known today as Thailand has been inhabited by humans since the paleolithic period (about 500,000 - 10,000 years ago). Prior to the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 13th century, various states thrived there, such as the various Tai, Mon, Khmer and Malay kingdoms, as seen through the numerous archaeological sites and artifacts that are scattered throughout the Siamese landscape.
Tourism in Thailand is a major economic factor of Thailand.
The tourism industry received a boost when US soldiers went there in the 1960s pausing from Vietnam.
In 2005, 13.38 million international guests visited Thailand, a 14.84% increase on 2004.
According to the Tourist Authority of Thailand, 65 per cent of tourists come from the Asia Pacific region, Japanese and Malaysians among the leaders. Western tourists come from Britain, Germany, Scandinavia and the USA and increasing numbers arrive from the Middle East and Russia. Asian tourists prefer Bangkok and the historical sights nearby, western tourists prefer Bangkok and the southern beaches. The region having the least tourism is the Isan in the northeast.
In recent years Thailand has been losing out on tourists seeking cultural destinations, many of whom prefer Cambodia (Angkor Wat) and Laos (Luang Prabang). To counter this Thailand is seeking more niche markets such as golf holidays, or holidays combined with medical treatment. These are especially aimed at Japan and South Korea and in the future China and Taiwan.
Thailand offers a great variety of attractions which can be combined with hobbies or leisure.
This includes
dive sites, sandy beaches, hundreds of islands, archaeological sites, museums,
ethnic and religious sites and World Heritage Sites.
Thailand has hundreds of islands (Phang Nga bay has 67, the Mu Ko Chang Marine National Park has 52, Tarutao National Marine Park has 51).
Ko Phi Phi Don ("ko" meaning "island" in the Thai language) is the largest of the Phi Phi Islands, in Thailand. It is the only island in the group with permanent inhabitants. Ko Phi Phi Don is now squarely on the tourist map, and tourists from all over the world (especially Europe, Japan, and the wealthier Southeast Asian countries) flock to the island. Accessible from Phuket and mainland Krabi province, all tourists must arrive by boat. (The trip from Phuket takes around 90 minutes.)
Thailand is home to several distinct geographic regions, partly corresponding to the provincial groups. The north of the country is mountainous, with the highest point Doi Inthanon at 2,565 metres (8,415 ft). The northeast consists of the Khorat Plateau, bordered to the east by the Mekong river. The centre of the country is dominated by the predominantly flat Chao Phraya river valley, which runs into the Gulf of Thailand. The south consists of the narrow Kra Isthmus that widens into the Malay Peninsula.
Patong Beach is a beach on Phuket's west coast, and to the town adjoining it. It is the main tourist resort in Phuket. It also contains an important centre of Phuket's nightlife and is the centre of cheap shopping on the island. The beach became popular with western tourists, especially Europeans, in the late 1980s. Numerous large hotels and chain hotels are located in Patong.
The local climate is tropical and characterised by monsoons. There is a rainy, warm, and cloudy southwest monsoon from mid May to September, as well as a dry, cool northeast monsoon from November to mid March. The southern isthmus is always hot and humid. Major cities beside the capital Bangkok include Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Sawan, Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok, Surat Thani, Phuket and Hat Yai.
Ao Nang is a central point of the coastal province of Krabi, Thailand. The town consists chiefly of a main street, which is dominated by restaurants, pubs, shops and other commerce aimed at tourists. The main beach is used by sunbathers to a certain extent, but there are hundreds of longtail boats which offer access to other beaches on the mainland and on nearby islands.
Railay Beach is a small peninsula located between the city of Krabi and Ao Nang. Accessible only by boat due to the high limestone cliffs cutting off mainland access. These cliffs attract rock climbers from all over the world, but the area is also popular due to its beautiful beaches and quiet relaxing atmosphere. Accommodation ranges from inexpensive bungalows popular with backpackers and climbers, to the renowned jet-set resort of Rayavadee.
Pattaya is a city in Thailand, located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 165 km southeast of Bangkok located within but not part of Amphoe Bang Lamung in the province of Chon Buri.
There are a number of scuba diving centres,
most of which offer basic diving courses. The islands outside Ao Nang are relatively
easy to access and uncrowded compared to many of the diving sites around Phi Phi
Island. Climbing is another activity widely available through centres in Ao Nang,
although most of the climbs are actually in the areas around the Railay, Tonsai
and Phra Nang beaches.
Cha Am houses the only American University in Thailand. Webster University has over 300 students from numerous international countries. Cha Am is also famous for its beach front which is home to many high rise beach resorts.
Haad Rin is a peninsular beach area and town on the southern tip of Ko Pha Ngan, an island in the Gulf of Thailand. Its two main beaches are Sunset Beach (Haad Rin Nai) to the south and the larger Sunrise Beach (Haad Rin Nok) to the north. The famous Full Moon Party takes place on Sunrise Beach each month.
The town and beach first became popular with backpackers escaping the tourist influx to Ko Samui in the 1980s. As the popularity of the beach and Full Moon Party have increased, the town has grown to accommodate the new visitors. The town is centred around Chicken Corner, a crossroads and popular meeting spot.
Kata Noi is a beach on the southwestern side of the island of Phuket in Thailand.
Khao
Lak is a resort beach in Thailand, located 80 km north of Phuket International
Airport in Takua Pa district, Phang Nga province and popular as a departure point
for liveaboard scuba diving trips to the Similan Islands.
Karon Beach refers
to a beach, and the town adjoining it, on the western coast of Phuket, Thailand.
The
beach is a popular destination for tourists. Generally quieter than neighbouring
Patong Beach, it is especially popular among families and couples, and less popular
with singles than Patong. It is also especially popular with Scandinavian tourists,
with many businesses catering especially to them.
At 514,000 km² (198,000 sq mi) , Thailand is the world's 49th largest country. It is comparable in size to France.
