Bournemouth is a large coastal resort town in the Borough of Bournemouth in Dorset, England.

The town was founded by Lewis Tregonwell in 1810 and grew steadily and became a proper town in 1870, when the railway came. Bournemouth used to be part of Hampshire until the reorganisation of local government in 1974 and the associated border changes, and is now in Dorset. Since 1997 the town has been administered by a unitary authority, meaning that it has autonomy from Dorset County Council.

It is a popular tourist destination as it is situated on the south coast of England. The town is a regional centre of education and business, and forms the main part of the South East Dorset conurbation, with the adjoining town of Poole. It is also the largest town on the English south coast between Southampton and Plymouth. The town is notable as the home of the Bournemouth International Centre and is also home to several financial companies including JPMorgan Chase, Nationwide Building Society, Liverpool Victoria, Standard Life Healthcare and The Richmond Group. Some apparently Bournemouth-named organisations, such as Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, The Arts Institute at Bournemouth and Bournemouth University are actually located wholly or partly within Poole and Bournemouth International Airport is, in fact, located in the neighbouring borough of Christchurch, Dorset.

The urban geography of Bournemouth is complex as the town merges with several other towns to form the South East Dorset conurbation, the whole area being sufficiently populous to be one of the major retail and commercial centres in the south of England. As such the town adjoins Poole in the west and Christchurch in the east. To the north west of Bournemouth is the small town of Wimborne and to the north east is the settlement of Ferndown. Bournemouth International Airport lies to the north east, towards Hurn. The town is intersected by the A338 dual carriageway, known as the "Wessex Way".

Although Bournemouth lies adjacent to the sea, the centre of the town lies inland - the commercial and civil heart of the town being The Square. From the Square the Upper and Lower Pleasure Gardens descend to the seafront and the pier. Areas within Bournemouth itself include Bear Cross, Boscombe, Kinson, Pokesdown and Westbourne. Traditionally a large retirement town, Bournemouth (mostly the Northbourne, Southbourne and Tuckton areas of Bournemouth together with the Wallisdown, and Talbot Village areas of Poole) have seen massive growth in recent years, especially through the growth of students attending Bournemouth University.

The town has a professional football club, AFC Bournemouth, who play in League Two, and Bournemouth FC. who play in the Wessex League Premier Division. AFC Bournemouth play at the Fitness First Stadium near Boscombe in Kings' Park, 2 miles east of the town centre. Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic F.C. were a non league side much closer to the town centre.

Bournemouth Airport (previously known as Hurn Airport) is an airport about 5 miles north east of Bournemouth, in southern England.

The main shopping streets in the centre of town are just behind the seafront on either side of the River Bourne; footpaths lead down to the sea from The Square through the lower section of Bournemouth Central Gardens.

The Bournemouth area has long been a place where many unusual species of animals and plants can be found.

Brownsea Island is the largest of the islands in Poole Harbour in the county of Dorset, England. The island is owned by the National Trust. Much of the island is open to the public and includes areas of woodland and heath with a wide variety of wildlife, together with cliff top views across Poole Harbour and the Isle of Purbeck.

Bear Cross is a suburb on the edge of Bournemouth, Dorset named after the crossroads made by the main road (A348) between Poole and Ringwood and the Wimborne Road/Magna Road (A341).

Boscombe is a suburb of the much larger Bournemouth. Boscombe is by the sea and it has its own pier, which was built in 1888, with a unique aircraft-wings design added in the 1950s at the entrance which is a listed building.

Hengistbury Head is a headland jutting into the English Channel between Bournemouth and Christchurch in the English county of Dorset.
At the end is a spit which creates the narrow entrance to Christchurch Harbour.

Holdenhurst is a small isolated village situated in green belt land in the north-east suburbs of Bournemouth, England.

Littledown is a suburb of Bournemouth, Dorset. Originally it was a small settlement to the south of the much more important Holdenhurst Village, and for centuries it existed as a huddle of farm buildings clinging on to the edge of the heathland.

Pokesdown is a small area of Bournemouth, a unitary authority in the ceremonial county of Dorset. It lies just east of the suburb of Boscombe and west of Southbourne.

Poole Bay is a bay in the English Channel, off the coast of Dorset in southern England, which runs from the mouth of Poole Harbour in the west to Hengistbury Head in the east. It consists of steep sandstone cliffs and several 'chines' that allow easy access to the sandy beaches below.

Southbourne is a suburb of Bournemouth. It is the most easterly part of the borough, between Boscombe and Christchurch, Dorset. The area was previously known as Stourfield.Strictly Southbourne refers to the area near to the coast; areas further inland are West Southbourne, Tuckton and Wick. In 1766, Edmund Bott had a Georgian mansion built to the east of Pokesdown village, commanding fine views of Christchurch Harbour and he named it Stourfield House. One of the most celebrated inhabitants of Stourfield House was Mary Eleanor Bowes, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Stourfield House later became a care home, looking after servicemen who had been injured in the Great War. Today only the front steps survive, leading to a block of flats in Douglas Mews, and marked by a Blue Plaque.

Springbourne is a suburb of Bournemouth. It occupies the north-east part of the main built-up area, north of Boscombe. Its formal boundaries are Windham Road to the west, the Wessex Way (A338) to the north, Ashley Road to the East and the railway line to the south.

The Square is a public square that marks the centre of Bournemouth.

Westbourne is a residential and shopping area of Bournemouth, Dorset.
